AfriForum says the public must participate in the process against Eskom tariffs

The civil rights organisation AfriForum calls on the public to participate in the public consultation sessions on Eskom’s proposed tariff increases from 18 November to 4 December. Eskom has submitted its proposed tariff increases for the next three years to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) and the public now has the opportunity to comment on them. Written comments must be submitted by November 1.

Among other things, Eskom has asked for a tariff increase of 36.15% for the 2025-26 financial year. According to Morné Mostert, manager of Local Government Affairs at AfriForum, the consumer cannot be expected to pay up now so that Eskom can try to correct years of misappropriation and mismanagement.

“AfriForum will participate in this process and continue to support communities to ensure fair electricity rates. We will also carefully monitor NERSA’s regulatory process and take action if unfair practices and malpractices are noticed,” concludes Mostert.

AfriForum will pass on more information about the public consultation sessions as it becomes available. The organisation is also running a petition against these unfair tariff increases and the public can make their voice heard there too.

Written comments can be sent by email to mypd@nersa.org.za by 16:00 on 1 November 2024.

The dates for the public consultation sessions are as follows, towns and venues will be announced later:

18-19 November – Western Cape

20 November – Eastern Cape

21-22 November – KwaZulu-Natal

25 November – Free State

26 November – Northern Cape
