AfriForum branch in Germiston protests after murder of baby Chevonne

AfriForum’s Germiston branch protested peacefully outside the Magistrate’s Court in Germiston on 25 May following the murder of Chevonne Rusch (2) earlier this month. The accused, Stefan van Niekerk, appeared in court and the AfriForum branch, together with many others, protested against his bail application.

“It is very tragic to hear of the death of Chevonne Rusch, who was only two years old. AfriForum strongly condemns this type of violence, which is aimed at the most vulnerable. It is important that communities do everything in their power to avoid these types of tragedies and that they protect each other. A peaceful protest, as carried out by AfriForum’s Germiston branch, is a good way for communities to express that they will not accept this type of behaviour and that the maximum sentence must be imposed,” says Petrus Coetzee, AfriForum’s District Coordinator. for the East Rand.

“These types of offenses should be punished in the heaviest possible way and we hope that with the protest we were able to cultivate awareness in terms of violence against women and children. Our neighborhood watch was also present at the demonstration to assist the SAPS in ensuring that proceedings run smoothly,” says Elize Hern, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Germiston branch.
