AfriForum demands urgent meeting with eDumbe Local Municipality

The civil rights organisation AfriForum has demanded an urgent meeting with the eDumbe Local Municipality after numerous complaints were directed to the Municipality regarding a smouldering landfill site in Paulpietersburg which is leaving a cloud of smoke over the town at night.

“AfriForum attended a meeting in November 2017 to discuss funds that were allocated for a new landfill site in Paulpietersburg. However, this project has been dragging on for such a long time that the national Department of Environmental Affairs needed to get involved,” says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.

“Paulpietersburg’s landfill site is one of the poorest sites in Northern KwaZulu-Natal and shows no improvement to be registered according to the law – this after approximately R18 million was granted for the new site. AfriForum will continue to place pressure on the Municipality to tackle this problem,” adds Van Aswegen.
