AfriForum launches Western Cape immune system initiative in collaboration with Solidarity Helping Hand

The civil rights organisation AfriForum on 7 May 2020 launched its Western Cape immune system initiative in collaboration with Solidarity Helping Hand in the Cape Town metropolitan and the Overstrand during which various old-age homes in the northern suburbs received nartjies. AfriForum has already launched this initiative in other provinces of South Africa as well.

“With this initiative we want to create awareness of the benefits that vitamin C gives your immune system. We decided to focus on the elderly, as they are the most vulnerable to contract COVID-19 and have difficulty recovering from the virus,” says Deon de Jager, AfriForum’s Head of Community Structures for the southern region.

In the metropolitan AfriForum visited old-age homes in Bellville, Durbanville and Kraaifontein and nartjies were also delivered to old-ages homes in the Overstrand. AfriForum plans to expand this initiative within their means to other suburbs in the metropolitan, as well as other towns in the province.

Dr Eugene Brink, AfriForum’s Manager of Health, says that this initiative will help to promote health and immunity in communities during a time that it is much needed. “We are now approaching winter and therefore want to help defenceless people keep their immune system strong. We have received similar donations of citrus in the northern parts of the country and appeal to other producers to also make donations.”

This initiative was made possible by generous donations received from the Langeberg district.
