AfriForum neighbourhood watch and Oakdale Watch join forces to extinguish fire at primary school

AfriForum’s Bellville neighbourhood watch, which forms part of AfriForum’s Cape Town North branch, joined forces with Oakdale Watch and law enforcement on 18 February 2020 to extinguish a fire in one of Laerskool Bellpark’s classrooms, after the classroom was set alight by an arsonist. A neighbourhood watch member of Oakdale Watch received a call from the school’s caretaker at around 05:00 who confirmed that a suspicious person had been noticed on the school grounds.

The caretaker and a patroller from Oakdale Watch searched the school grounds and saw the suspect who fled after starting the fire. After swift and good cooperation between AfriForum’s Bellville neighbourhood watch, Oakdale Watch and other role players, the fire was extinguished with buckets of water.

“We are thankful that security role-players and neighbourhood watch members are vigilant. We cannot allow anarchy to triumph – especially not at vulnerable places such as our local schools,’’ says Tommy van Zyl, Chairman of AfriForum’s Cape Town North branch.
