AFRIFORUM SUBMITS CORRUPTION COMPLAINT AGAINST FIKILE MBALULA AND DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT

AfriForum today submitted a formal complaint to the office of the Public Protector requesting an urgent investigation into the maladministration and possible corruption that is currently taking place at the Department of Transport.

This follows after the Department launched the eNatis system in 2007. After 14 years the system is still not functioning properly, forcing law abiding citizens who are unable to renew their licenses to revert to paying bribes to get an appointment.

The Department’s inefficiency has also left the door open for opportunistic third parties who are now the only ones who seem to be able to secure appointments, forcing the public to pay anything from R240 upwards to secure a slot to renew their licence.

AfriForum also launched a website for the public to submit their opposition to Mbalula’s proposed amendment published in the Government Gazette, which will see motorists pay R250 just to make an online booking on the failed eNatis system.

Lockdown expired driver’s licence renewals have been extended for the third time, highlighting the chaotic state of South Africa’s driver’s licence system. Thousands of motorists are still unable to book online licence slots for driver’s licences and card renewals.

Jacques Broodryk, Campaign Manager at AfriForum, says that the ANC administered driver’s license system being in shambles is turning thousands of law-abiding citizens into criminals.

“The ANC has demonstrated that they have the reverse Midas touch, turning everything they touch into catastrophic failure. A party with their track record has no right to demand that the public pays even more to compensate for their failures,” Broodryk concludes.
