AfriForum’s #OurTown campaign: Edenvale launches clean-up actions
As part of AfriForum’s #OurTown campaign which kicks off in October 2018, the organisation’s Edenvale branch on 22 September held the first of a number of mass clean-up actions in the city centre.
The branch identified various intersections since June 2018 that have become an eyesore for the community and business owners. The corner of Fountain Road and Central Avenue, as well as the intersection at Main Road and Baker Street in Eastleigh have already been tackled by the branch.
Approximately 15 members of the branch rendered assistance by pruning trees, removing weeds, cleaning stormwater drains and picking up rubbish in the area. Solid Waste supplied black bags during the action and ensured that the kerbing stones are painted.
“The branch is planning on targeting a large intersection to clean properly fortnightly in the near future. Even though these actions do not offer a sustainable solution for the problem, it is still gladdening to see how people come to a halt on street and wish to become involved themselves or simply just expressing their acknowledgement towards the branch members,” says Linda McKenzie, Vice-chairperson of AfriForum’s Edenvale branch.
“Such an action serves as concrete proof that community structures must themselves strive towards a cleaner, safer and sustainable future. The branch is planning on placing large recycling containers in the area to subsequently try and motivate the community to keep the area clean and neat,” concludes Peter Kingsley, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Edenvale branch.
