AfriForum’s Phalaborwa branch stops copper thieves

On 31 August 2019, AfriForum’s Phalaborwa branch rounded up thieves who were busy transporting copper from the Palabora Mining Company (PMC).

One of the suspects was spotted while running into bushes close to the mine by a neighbourhood watch member during a patrol in Koper Road. The neighbourhood watch immediately investigated, and after a wide search found 140 kg of stolen copper plates in two different hiding places.

The neighbourhood watch informed the mine and the SAPS of the find, and an investigation is currently underway.

“The Phalaborwa branch once again showed what communities can achieve when everyone take responsibility for their own safety and work together to curb crime,” says Cobus Louw, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Phalaborwa branch.
