AfriForum’s Roodepoort neighbourhood watch arrests suspects

The AfriForum neighbourhood watch in Roodepoort on 20 July 2020 executed various arrests during which suspects were arrested for the possession of explosives and cable theft. Some of the suspects that were also apprehended are illegal immigrants. This follows after the neighbourhood watch executed a routine patrol in cooperation with the SAPS, CPF and other units. After a routine patrol was executed again on 21 July, four more suspects were arrested for cable theft.

Thanks to the good cooperative relationship between the respective role-players, they succeeded in following up the leads of the community and collectively devised workable plans to bring the suspects to book. The illegal immigrants will be detained until being deported to their country of origin later this month. An investigation will be launched into the activities of the copper thieves to determine the syndicate they are involved with. The explosives and copper that is 100 m in length and 5 cm in diameter, were returned to Prasa.

“Cooperation between different role-players is one of the principles of area protection. These arrests are good examples of the results that can be achieved when communities do not stand back,” says Llewellynn Hemmens, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for the northern region.
