AfriForum’s Standerton branch launches phase two of clean-up project

The AfriForum branch in Standerton on 7 March 2017 kicked off phase two of the clean-up project at the Lombaard Street cemetery in the town.

During phase one the branch mowed the cemetery’s lawns with the help of a local contractor. Phase two entails AfriForum cleaning those areas between the tombstones.

“Due to the negligence of the Lekwa Local Municipality, no maintenance is being performed in the cemetery. More do-it-yourself initiatives must be conducted by communities to ensure that our towns are clean and neat and can be a home where people want to settle down,” says Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s Regional Coordinator for Mpumalanga West.

“We are planning on dividing the cemetery into blocks and erecting boards that indicate who is responsible for the clean-up of the area. We will also encourage community members and businesses to become involved in a permanent maintenance project to keep the cemetery clean and neat,” says Leon Enslin, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Standerton branch.

“Standing together is the answer and solution to making a difference in our communities. We can no longer allow the negligence of municipalities to cause the further deterioration of our towns,” adds Coetzer.

If members of the public would like to become involved in this project or if they want to deliver inputs, they can call the branch’s emergency number (071 209 2978).
