AfriForum’s Standerton branch presents wish list to Lekwa Local Municipality

The Standerton branch of the civil rights organisation AfriForum presented a wish list to the Lekwa Local Municipality on 28 February 2017.

This follows after the branch identified various community problems and priorities that have up until now not been addressed by the Municipality in its Integrated Development Plan (IDP).

“The local branch has been attempting for the past two months to set up a meeting with the Municipal Manager, but without any success,” says Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s Regional Coordinator for Mpumalanga West.

“It is the Municipality’s constitutional obligation to look after the community’s interests and to deliver services. AfriForum will continuously apply pressure to ensure that these duties are not neglected any longer,” adds Coetzer.

“It significantly worsens the situation that service delivery issues must first deteriorate into a dilemma before being addressed. AfriForum will continuously monitor the Municipality’s progress in this regard and launch do-it-yourself projects where necessary when Lekwa fails to fulfil its obligations,” says Leon Enslin, Chairperson of the AfriForum branch in Standerton.
