AfriForum’s Waverley branch tackles various projects
The AfriForum branch in Waverley this past month secured a power substation, tested water and ensured that various potholes in the neighbourhood were filled. This was done in cooperation with the Moot Community Initiative and other role-players.
The area around the power substation was overgrown, which posed a safety risk. The community cleared the area, erected cameras, reinforced doors and burglar bars, and erected floodlights. The community sponsored the cameras. The AfriForum branch also sprinkled salt on the premises to delay weed growth.
The AfriForum branch also tested water last week to determine the quality of Waverley’s drinking water.
“We could determine that the drinking water adheres to minimum standards and contains no harmful bacteria. AfriForum will continuously test the water, as residents have a constitutional right to clean drinking water,” says Tiaan Oosthuizen, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Gauteng North.
“Various potholes in Waverley were repaired due to good teamwork between the community and the Tshwane Metro. The branch indicates potholes through signs that they put up on the roadside. It then takes the Municipality approximately one to two weeks to repair the potholes,” says Hendrik van der Westhuizen, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Waverley branch.
“Waverley is an outstanding example of how an entire community can take responsibility and work together to ensure that the community prospers,” Oosthuizen concludes.
