AfriForum’s #YourTown campaign: Germiston branch launches mass clean-up action

The AfriForum branch in Germiston has declared war against the precarious state of the town and subsequently launched a mass clean-up action in the Elsburg area on 17 November. This action forms part of AfriForum’s #YourTown campaign which is aimed at solving problems that we experience in our towns by ourselves. The branch tackled the Elsburg town hall, the area surrounding the police station and the EMPD offices, as well as the road divider in the main street.

A local contractor handled the cutting of the grass, while branch members picked up the litter in the area. Members of the branch and the community assisted in pruning trees, removing weed and picking up litter in the area. Ten bakkie loads of refuse were eventually transported from the area. The branch furthermore cleaned up a monument that was overgrown with grass and weed while also cleaning up the area surrounding the monument.

“Even though this action is not a sustainable solution to the problem, it is gladdening to see how people on the street came to a halt for a while to become involved or to simply express their gratitude towards the branch members,” says Elize Hern, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Germiston branch.

“Actions such as these serve as concrete evidence that community structures need to strive for a cleaner, safer and sustainable future and must become involved themselves to actively tackle problems. The community is encouraged to become involved with the actions of the branch,” concludes Hern.
