Alberton neighborhood watch works with SAPS to combat crime

The AfriForum neighborhood watch in Alberton on 5 April worked with the SAPS and other security structures in the area to curb crime. The purpose of the operation was to increase visibility, prevent burglary, and arrest motorists driving under the influence of alcohol. During the operation, the participants patrolled and manned a vehicle control point (VBP).

“We are proud of the cooperation and relationship we were able to establish with the SAPS ‒ this is only possible if there is mutual trust and respect. For this collaboration to continue and ensure that our neighborhood watch functions at our best at all times, it is necessary that our members are not only equipped with the right equipment, but also with good training and that is exactly what we receive as part of AfriForum’s security structures,” said Louis van Aswegen, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Alberton neighborhood watch.

“We are very excited to see how the hard work behind the scenes bears fruit. Furthermore, we are grateful to see how solid and good relationships are being built with other role players in the security community, such as the SAPS. The safety challenges that the communities face these days require that neighborhood watch members be equipped with the necessary knowledge to act with confidence and be able to demonstrate good decision-making,” said Petrus Coetzee, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand.
