Continued pressure by AfriForum and various other firearm – and civil society organisations today paid off

The Portfolio Committee on Police today decided to hold back on discussing the proposed amendments to the Firearms Control Act due to the negative public reaction to the proposed amendments.

“Although we welcome this decision, it is still too little. These ridiculous proposed amendments need to be scrapped in its entirety. Police Minister, Bheki Cele, should be concerning himself with the vast amount of firearms and ammunition that gets lost by his department, or is illegally sold to criminals, rather than trying to disarm law-abiding citizens,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s Campaigns Manager.

Another major issue that needs immediate attention, is the immense backlog in firearm license applications at the central firearm registry. Government needs to get its house in order.

AfriForum would like to thank their members and every member of the public who supported this cause.
