AfriForum has once again compiled a report that proves that the human rights situation in South Africa, especially with regard to minority rights, continues to deteriorate in 2025. This report exposes the following: the number and severity of the South African government’s racially discriminatory policies are increasing; private property rights are increasingly under threat; incitement to violence and hatred against minority groups by prominent politicians are worsening; critics of the government are being subjected to intimidation and police investigations; and minority heritage and education are being targeted, attacked and marginalised.
When a voice is absent, who speaks for you?
South Africa’s transition to democracy in 1994 was built on the promise of a more equal and just society without racial discrimination, especially by the government.
More than three decades later, AfriForum believes that the rights and interests of minority communities are increasingly under threat and gross racial discrimination by the ANC-led government is on the rise. Government policies, political rhetoric, legislation affecting property, cultural and language rights and violence affecting communities have contributed to growing uncertainty about their future in South Africa.
At the heart of this concern is a fundamental principle: Afrikaners should have the freedom to exist meaningfully as Afrikaners, freely, safely and prosperously – in the country they call home, without being targeted, discriminated against or scapegoated.
This principle should apply to all communities. AfriForum believes that freedom and true non-racialism should provide the foundation for a future in which every community can preserve its identity, participate meaningfully in society and prosper.
A voice beyond South Africa’s borders
The world must know is AfriForum’s international campaign to ensure that issues affecting, in particular, minority communities receive attention beyond South Africa’s borders.
Launched in 2019, the campaign seeks to:
- inform the international community about issues affecting minority rights in South Africa.
- engage policymakers, political leaders, the media and international institutions.
- mobilise South Africans and others abroad to take a stand to protect these abovementioned rights.
