AfriForum’s Bloemfontein neighbourhood watches bring suspects to book

Members of AfriForum’s Bloemfontein neighbourhood watches caught two suspected burglars and had a suspect in possession of drugs arrested on 9 July 2017.

“The Uitsig neighbourhood watch was on patrol when they noticed two suspicious persons in a graveyard. The suspects started to run, after which the neighbourhood watch caught and arrested them. Among other things balaclavas, screwdrivers, knives and other burglary equipment was found on them,” says Pieter Myburg, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Bloemfontein.

In another incident on the same evening a suspicious vehicle that was standing in Pellissier Drive was investigated by patrol members, members of SecuriForce and ITR. The South African Police Service (SAPS) was called out. The police found that the occupant was in possession of a large quantity of cocaine and heroin made up in large and small packets – possibly with the intent of selling it. The SAPS arrested the suspect.

Thanks to an effective communication system that was established through AfriForum’s Project Nehemiah, AfriForum could ensure that the needed assistance was provided in time.

“These two incidents are proof that communities can work together well to combat crime,” Myburg concludes.
