AfriForum’s East Rand neighbourhood watches receive anti-hijacking training
Members of AfriForum’s Alberton, Brakpan, Germiston and Springs neighbourhood watches received anti-hijacking training on 22 and 23 May 2019. This training was presented for the first time in the East Rand and focussed mainly on tips and measures that patrollers can apply as a precaution and also to handle hijacking situations.
Thomas van Dalen, AfriForum’s National Training Manager, presented the training and close to 70 neighbourhood watch members attended.
According to Van Dalen professional training is necessary for each safety structure:
“AfriForum’s neighbourhood watch members must act within the framework of the law at all times. Further, it is important that neighbourhood watch members be informed on how they must approach emergency situation and can take necessary precautions to act proactively.”
“It is encouraging to see the involvement of community members, as well as how each person is willing to prioritise the safety of their own community. About 450 patrollers from the East Rand have received training in nine modules since January 2019. Victim support is the last module that will be presented to neighbourhood watches on 5 and 6 June 2019,” says Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s Safety Coordinator for the Northern region.
