KZN Police Commissioner’s encouragement to defend oneself welcomed

The responsible use of legally owned firearms is a vital component of community safety. This view of AfriForum is in line with Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, KwaZulu-Natal’s Commissioner of Police, recent statement urging firearm license holders to defend themselves if confronted by criminals. AfriForum commends this statement which underlines a crucial aspect of responsible firearm ownership: The ability to use a firearm effectively and legally in self-defence, particularly in situations where surrendering could lead to greater harm.

As Mkhwanazi highlighted, criminals who seize firearms from law-abiding citizens can and often do use these weapons to perpetrate further violence, including murder. Therefore, it is not only a right but a duty for firearm owners to ensure their weapons do not fall into the wrong hands.

“AfriForum agrees with Mkhwanazi’s statement, but it is also important to remember that the South African Police Service (SAPS) has been one of the biggest suppliers of firearms to criminals, especially to gangs in the Western Cape,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s chief spokesperson for Community Safety.

However, owning a firearm comes with significant responsibilities. It is not enough to simply possess such a weapon; one must be proficient in its use, especially under pressure. AfriForum emphasises the importance of regular, realistic training in high-stress scenarios. Such training not only enhances a firearm owner’s ability to protect themselves but also ensures that they can do so within the confines of the law.

“Our communities face ever-increasing threats and the ability to effectively defend oneself and others is crucial. We support Mkhwanazi’s message and encourage all firearm owners to seek ongoing training. By doing so, they not only safeguard their own lives but contribute to the broader safety of their communities.”
