AfriForum achieves success at Libanon landfill site

AfriForum on 24 August 2017 held a meeting with the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development as well as the Westonaria Local Municipality’s waste management division to discuss the state of the Libanon landfill site, after which a formal audit of the site was conducted.

This follows after the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning instructed the particular government institutions to cooperate with the civil rights watchdog in conducting an audit of this landfill site and to take the necessary steps to rehabilitate it with reference to AfriForum’s annual landfill sites audit project.

“Even though the landfill site still does not adhere to the minimum requirements, action plans were put in place to ensure rehabilitation. A service provider will be appointed in December 2017 to manage the rehabilitation and maintenance of the site,” says Chris Boshoff, AfriForum’s Coordinator for Environmental Affairs.

AfriForum is planning on auditing 11 landfill sites across South Africa and will continuously monitor the process to ensure that these sites are up to standard.
