AfriForum and several interest groups reject the NHI bill at Krugersdorp public hearing

The extensive opposition to National Health Insurance (NHI) became clear today in Krugersdorp where AfriForum and several organisations rejected this bill at a public hearing hosted by the Gauteng Legislature. AfriForum argues that this radical bill must be scrapped in the interest of all South Africans – especially in light of its economic unsustainability.

Numerous stakeholders attended this hearing to point out the absurdity of the ANC’s NHI plans. This includes organisations such as AfriForum, the Institute of Race Relations (IRR), the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) and medical aids such as Momentum Health. These organisations collectively represent millions of South Africans. Although the comments ranged from complete rejection of the bill to criticism of specific articles or clauses, all the interest groups agreed that the bill in its current form should not be approved.

According to Louis Boshoff, Campaign Officer at AfriForum, the mounting opposition to the implementation of the NHI’s fairy tale, in which free healthcare is promised for everyone, is proof that this plan is stillborn.

“The ANC is trying to implement their ideologically driven policy with false promises of free for all health services, but the public is not as uninformed as they had hoped,” explains Boshoff. “You cannot on the one hand take away the freedom and profitability of the health sector and on the other hand expect healthcare to be more readily available – that was the clear message today.”

The NHI bill was drawn up in 2019 and has already been approved by an ANC majority in the Parliament’s National Assembly, but the National Council of Provinces has yet to vote on it. However, before this can happen there must be an opportunity for civil input from all the provinces. Public hearings have yet to be held in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal. It is here that AfriForum continue to use the opportunity to build public pressure against the bill.

AfriForum encourages the public to oppose NHI at public hearings or by visiting www.jougesondheid.co.za for further information.
