AfriForum part of Provincial Rural Safety Committee in KZN

The civil rights organisation AfriForum has been part of the Provincial Rural Safety Committee in KwaZulu-Natal, which comprises various SAPS role-players, as well as government institutions such as the South African National Defence Force, the Department of Transport, the National Prosecuting Authority and other government organisations.  

The committee meets monthly at the SAPS’s head office in Durban, where rural crimes and problems are discussed and all role-players give input. During the Committee’s first meeting for 2018 – held on Wednesday, 10 January – AfriForum suggested that technology such as synthetic DNA to help curb the high levels of stock theft. The organisation is busy preparing to soon do a presentation to the Committee in this regard.

“We hope on obtaining the support of the MEC for Rural Safety, as well as the Department of Agriculture to utilise this technology to its fullest in the fight against rural crime,” says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.
