AfriForum’s Meyerspark neighbourhood watch brings suspect to book

During a patrol on 11 October 2018 the Meyerspark neighbourhood watch was contacted by an AfriForum member after the member caught a trespasser on his premises. The suspect attempted to escape and in the process assaulted another person in the street. Patrol vehicles arrived at the scene just in time and managed to bring the suspect to book, after which the SAPS was called.

The suspect was busy stealing tools when he was caught by his employer. The suspect and employer started fighting and in his attempt to escape the suspect was noticed by the AfriForum member on his premises. The employer was hurriedly treated for bitemarks.

“I would like to thank our members for their selfless action, as well as the neighbourhood watch for their speedy reaction,” says André Badenhorst, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Meyerspark branch.

The suspect’s employer in the meantime laid charges of theft and assault against him and the AfriForum member a charge of unlawful trespassing.

“This case is an excellent example of a well-organised neighbourhood watch which reacts quickly and succeeds in safeguarding the community of Meyerspark,” says Lambert de Klerk, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Pretoria South.

Community members can become involved at AfriForum by sending an SMS with the word “Meyerspark” to 45341 (R1) or by sending an email to lambert.deklerk@afriforum.co.za.
