AfriForum’s observers and neighbourhood watches gear up for election period

AfriForum’s 134 observers are ready to watch the national election on 29 May closely at polling stations. The civil rights organisation’s more than 170 neighbourhood watches are also on high alert nationwide should any public violence break out during or after the election.

AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches have already achieved great successes in the past, such as during the July 2021 riots and when they played a preventive role in 2023 together with other security initiatives when the EFF wanted to force the country to a standstill. “The presence and hard work of AfriForum’s safety structures have made major contributions to foil attempts and threats of riots,” says Jacques Broodryk, chief spokesperson for Community Safety at AfriForum.

The AfriForum air wing, which consists of more than 40 drones, is also on standby to gather live information in areas that may become inaccessible, the drones are also regularly used to track or monitor suspects. The AfriForum neighbourhood watches will remain on high alert even after the election results have been announced.

“Where our neighbourhood watches are established, they are ready to help secure their communities in an efficient manner and within the framework of the law,” says Broodryk.

The organisation also advises the public to make sure they know where they should go to vote as they will not be allowed to vote elsewhere, where they are not registered. The information can be verified at https://maps.elections.org.za/vsfinder/.

AfriForum also urges the public to report any irregularities or intimidation during the voting process to navrae@afriforum.co.za.
