AfriForum’s #YourTown campaign: Kempton Park branch launches sustainable recycling project

On 29 May 2018 AfriForum’s Kempton Park branch launched a long-term recycling project in conjunction with Mould, Empower, Serve (MES) – a non-profit organisation that focusses on job creation for homeless people. The project, which forms part of AfriForum’s #YourTown campaign, will be actively managed during the following 12 months in Kempton Park and will target access-controlled areas, local schools and churches.

In 2017 AfriForum’s Kempton Park branch management already identified the need for a recycling project in the town, due to the drastic decline in local refuse removal services. After continued meetings and cooperation with MES and the chairpersons of the various access-controlled areas, the first recycling bin was placed in Van Riebeeck Estate. In the past month another eight bins were placed at the Kaleideo Apostolic Faith Mission church in Glen Marais. The management team from MES removes the refuse as soon as the bins are full and they then use the income they generate from the recycling for job creation.

“The bins have been designed especially aesthetic and environmentally friendly. This project is unique, and we hope to expand this DIY initiative to other towns on the East Rand,” says Gerald Britt, Environmental Affairs portfolio Chairperson at AfriForum’s Kempton Park branch.

“This recycling project is an excellent example of community members and organisations walking the talk and being proactive in making their towns neater and safer. We look forward to seeing the potential that can be achieved within the next year,” says Marie Naude, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand.
