Bethal branch donates vegetables to retirement homes

On 16 August, AfriForum’s Bethal branch donated vegetables from the community vegetable garden to the Silwerjare Tuiste vir Bejaardes after the branch discovered that this home was struggling financially.

Around 60 kg of spinach was harvested and donated to Silwerjare. In the coming week, more spinach will be harvested and donated to the Residentia Palm-Oord retirement home.

The idea of a community vegetable garden come about during the COVID-19 pandemic; the purpose is to sustainably supply the community with fresh vegetables. Since then, the project has been providing vegetables to various community organisations, such as these retirement homes and Bethal’s soup kitchen, almost every month. During the months when vegetables are abundant, such as in the summertime, the branch often donates vegetables to organisations in towns around Bethal.

“The project is a huge success and a source of food for many organisations that are struggling to keep afloat in the current economy,” says Hennie Bekker, District Coordinator for the Highveld.
