Cape Town North neighbourhood watch apprehends two burglars

AfriForum’s Cape Town North neighbourhood watch apprehended two burglars on 8 August and handed them to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for arrest.

Yolanda Fritz, a member of the neighbourhood watch, received a call from a resident in Meath Street about a break-in during the early hours of the morning. Fritz informed the neighbourhood watch of the incident and contacted the SAPS. A case was opened, but unfortunately, the burglar got away.

Around 18:00 in the afternoon, the same resident contacted the neighbourhood watch and reported that there were again suspected burglars in her yard. The neighbourhood watch contacted the local security companies, Civil Defense Force (CDF Security) and Basset Security, for help. After that, the neighbourhood watch and the SAPS immediately rushed to the scene. On arrival, the neighbourhood watch and the security companies searched the premises and arrested one person.

“While we were still at the scene, I received a call about a break-in at the Herbert Street Special School in Bellville. The security companies remained at the scene with the suspected burglar while the neighbourhood watch left for the school. When we arrived, we could see that there had been a break-in and we saw two burglars running away. One of the suspects was arrested, and stolen goods were found on him. Unfortunately, the second suspect got away as he ran into the taxi rank,” says Fritz.

“Recently, the school has been targeted by crime to such an extent that AfriForum’s Cape Town North branch, in collaboration with JP Muller from COBRA Self-Defense, offered the teachers classes in self-defence. Hopefully, now that two burglars have been apprehended and arrested, we have sent a clear message that we will not tolerate crime in our area and criminals will be arrested. We want to thank Basset Security and CDF Security for their help and quick response,” concludes Fritz.
