Cele once again proves he is not fit for role as Minister of Police

AfriForum Community Safety believes that the recent statements by Bheki Cele, Minister of Police, that police members’ leave will be canceled during the festive season once again indicates that Cele has no idea what his role or powers are.

The minister does not have the authority to make operational or labor decisions about the police and its members. Just as Cele had no right to intimidate people on beaches during the Covid-19 lockdown and just as the minister has no right to play detective at high profile crime scenes, he also has no right to make decisions about police members’ leave.

“The minister should instead permanently address the huge shortage of members in the police service. Although crime usually increases before and during the festive season, the shortage of police officers is a problem that has a negative impact on crime prevention throughout the year,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s spokesperson for Community Safety.

“Cele has proven time and time again that he does not understand his powers or the function of his position. How can dedicated members of the police service stay motivated if the minister on a regular basis proves his incompetence with thoughtless remarks,” concludes Broodryk.

Should the minister try to implement these plans, it will certainly lead to labor disputes at a time when police members should be focused on crime fighting and investigations.
