Fine political parties for election posters, demands AfriForum

AfriForum calls on the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality to act immediately and fine political parties, whose election posters are still hanging on lampposts. Two months after the general election on 29 May, there are still some of these posters that have not been removed.

According to the Tshwane Metro’s Bylaw for Outdoor Advertising, all political parties are required to remove their election posters within 21 days after an election. The failure to comply with this regulation not only constitutes a breach of this Bylaw, but also provides an opportunity for the Metro to enforce fines.

According to a letter that AfriForum sent to the Tshwane Metro on 29 August, these fines can be a significant source of income for the Metro, that could help in maintaining public order and cleanliness.

“AfriForum urges the Tshwane Metro to issue fines to the responsible parties for each illegal poster that remains displayed after the specified period. The enforcement of the Bylaw for Outdoor Advertising is crucial in upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all entities adhere to the Metro’s regulations,” says Sampie Steinberg, AfriForum’s head for the northern region.

AfriForum is more than willing to assist the Tshwane Metro in getting rid of the illegal election posters in the public. According to the provisions within the Bylaw for Outdoor Advertising, the Metro has the authority to appoint external parties to remove illegal posters at the expense of the responsible parties.

“We suggest that AfriForum be appointed to help with the removal of these posters. We are prepared to undertake this task promptly and efficiently, ensuring that all posters are removed in accordance with the Tshwane Metro’s standards,” says Dewet Ungerer, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Greater Pretoria South.

AfriForum is of the opinion that this collaborative approach will not only speed up the process of removing the posters but will also serve as a strong deterrent against future non-compliance with the Bylaw for Outdoor Advertising.

AfriForum is ready to discuss the details of this proposed collaboration with the Tshwane Metro as soon as possible.
