AfriForum demands transparency about Crime Prevention Wardens

The civil rights organisation AfriForum has raised its concern about the lack of transparency regarding the recruitment and training procedures adhered to with the appointment of Gauteng’s new Crime Prevention Wardens (CPW).

In a letter to the MEC for Community Safety in Gauteng, Faith Mazibuko, the organisation requests answers to questions about the training the CPW’s received, whom the training provider was, how the command structure of the CPW’s is structured and how the CPW’s plan on working together with community safety structures.

“Unfortunately, we’ve seen this public relations stunt used by ANC politicians before where they hastily trained and deployed border guards to create the impression that they are addressing the crime issue in the country, when in actual fact, unvetted, poorly trained and unequipped officials are thrown in the deep end,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s spokesperson for Community Safety.

“Therefore, the public has the right to know whether these wardens will be worth the salaries they’ll be earning on the back of the taxpayer or if this is just another ANC ploy in preparation for next year’s elections,” concludes Broodryk.
