AfriForum helps Chess SA with a court case against unlawful suspension

The civil rights organisation AfriForum and Chess SA were in the Pretoria High Court today regarding the unlawful suspension of Chess SA earlier this year by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC). AfriForum is helping Chess SA to have this unlawful suspension set aside in court so that the correct procedures can be followed in the future.

On 29 September SASCOC submitted two new affidavits as part of their evidence in this case. These documents were the main discussion in today’s proceedings as Chess SA’s legal team was not given sufficient opportunity to prepare and respond to these documents in order to refute them.

Ronald Peters, manager of AfriForum Sport, argues that this information submitted by SASCOC at such a late stage is just another delaying tactic on SASCOC’s part. “SASCOC knows that the content of this case has serious implications for them and they will do anything at this stage to delay the case,” says Peters.

AfriForum strongly condemns the mismanagement of sports federations and governing bodies of all sports in South Africa, because it has a profound impact on the role that sport should play in the development and empowerment of communities.

The case was adjourned and Chess SA’s legal team was given the opportunity to respond to the affidavits submitted by SASCOC’s legal team by 13 October. This order also gives the parties the opportunity to approach the Deputy Judge President to get a special court date for this case.
