AfriForum opposes NHI bill in Southern Cape

AfriForum representatives attended the public hearings for the proposed National Health Insurance (NHI) held on 18 and 19 September in Beaufort West and George respectively, to submit oral comments on this.

According to AfriForum, the bill is entirely unrealistic and impractical. In AfriForum’s comments at these two hearings Marthinus Erasmus, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Southern Cape, pointed to several important concerns that AfriForum has regarding the bill, namely the lack of details on how the NHI could be implemented, what it would cost and who would manage it. In addition, AfriForum believes that the intended funding of the NHI will place an unsustainable burden on taxpayers.

“The government should firstly focus on economic growth and tackle the problems in the current health system rather than trying to launch a programme like the NHI. The money that is currently being spent on this could much rather be spent on the resolving existing problems at public hospitals,” explains Erasmus.

AfriForum warns that the NHI will be an expensive mistake, which will not make any improvement to South Africa’s health system. Instead, it will paralyse the system. The majority of available research and analysis shows that the NHI will be an expensive and devastating failure.

“We request that the National Council of Provinces reject the bill before it leads to the destruction of health care in South Africa,” concludes Erasmus.
