AfriForum sends urgent letter to the Minister of Water and Sanitation regarding water crisis in Parys

AfriForum’s Parys branch today sent an urgent letter to Senzo Mchunu, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, regarding the water crisis in Parys. Currently, some residents have been without water for the umpteenth time for up to two weeks or longer. Mchunu said during a recent meeting that he could be held responsible if there still were any water problems in Parys. Since then, however, nothing has improved – on the contrary.

In the recent meeting, the minister insisted that the Ngwathe Local Municipality immediately purchase a generator so that the waterworks can continue operating during power outages. Furthermore, Mchunu insisted that proper security be put in place since the municipality mentioned vandalism. He also insisted that key positions such as the municipal manager, chief financial officer and directors be filled with competent people as soon as possible. However, to date, nothing has changed. AfriForum learned that a municipal manager must first be appointed to authorise the purchase of a generator. Furthermore, there is still virtually no security at the waterworks – the gate is open, and anyone can enter.

“It is unacceptable that the residents of Parys must suffer so much, especially after the minister has undertaken to see that the necessary steps be taken. These key positions must urgently be filled with competent people so that the Ngwathe Local Municipality can do its job. Water is a basic human right; therefore, we expect positive feedback by the end of the week. Otherwise, AfriForum’s legal team will take the necessary action,” said Alta Pretorius, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Mooi River.
