AfriForum succeeds with court application against appointments by Nama Khoi Municipality

The civil rights organisation AfriForum brought a successful application in the Northern Cape High Court against the MEC for Local Government in the Northern Cape and the Nama Khoi Municipality on 2 February 2018. The application was brought to determine the validity of the appointments of certain municipal officers, namely Brandon Love, William Bowers and Trevor Beukes.

Judge President Pule Tlaletsi ordered in his court order that the MEC had 14 days to put in place steps to compel the Municipal Council to address the issue of the invalid appointments.

The Court also ordered that these steps had to include that the MEC should bring a court application for a declaratory order over the invalidity of the appointments. The MEC should also provide the Court as well as AfriForum within 14 days with a complete report explaining the steps that had been taken to comply with the court order.
