AfriForum urges transparent water security measures during Lesotho Highlands Water Project’s scheduled tunnel maintenance

AfriForum has submitted an inquiry to the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) seeking clarification and expressing concerns regarding the upcoming six-month closure of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project tunnel. The closure is scheduled from 1 October 2024 to 31 March 2025 – this maintenance period is crucial for extensive repairs to optimise water supply to various municipalities, particularly in the Free State and Gauteng.

The Lesotho Highlands Water Project tunnel serves a pivotal role in supplying water to the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS), impacting regions such as the Mafube, Nketoana and Dihlabeng Local Municipalities in the Free State, as well as the entirety of Gauteng. AfriForum acknowledges the necessity of the maintenance work and seeks detailed information on the plans and measures the DWS has in place to ensure water security during the maintenance period.

Given the potential impact on water availability from rivers during the maintenance period, AfriForum emphasises the importance of understanding specific plans and management systems developed by the DWS to guarantee water security in affected areas. “We are keen to learn about any contingency measures in place to address unforeseen challenges that may arise,” says Lambert de Klerk, AfriForum’s manager for Environmental Affairs.

Recognising the significance of community awareness and preparedness, AfriForum requests comprehensive details on the communication strategies the DWS will employ to keep residents informed about the situation. De Klerk highlights the importance of guiding residents in using water sparingly during the shutdown period.

AfriForum acknowledges the complexities involved in managing such projects and appreciates the efforts of the DWS in ensuring water supply during this maintenance period. The organisation emphasises that transparency in providing information will assist in fostering public understanding and cooperation.
