Alberton branch raises awareness about safety

The AfriForum branch in Alberton hosted a very successful event to raise awareness about safety in the environment the past weekend. The day included several talks for young people, which provided the necessary knowledge on how to prevent kidnappings, techniques to deal safely with fires, as well as environmental awareness. The day also included a tree planting initiative.

Attendees could take part in fun activities such as tug-of-war and sack races, while there was also the opportunity to shoot targets with airsoft guns.

The aim of this initiative was to create a space where neighbours could meet each other and at the same time connect with the various role players within the community’s safety structures. Various organisations, including private security companies, the South African Police Service (SAPS), the community policing forum (CPF) and private fire services, participated in the initiative. AfriForum’s Alberton branch also showcased its various initiatives, such as cutting lawns, projects focused on cleaning parks and repairing potholes. The branch’s new team trained to fight fires was also present.

AfriForum’s Alberton branch thanks all the role players who made this day a huge success.

“The aim of this project was to create awareness about safety in the area and to make sure that the Alberton community mobilises themselves to become actively involved in the safety of their town. A community that comes together in its diversity to solve common issues and promote a culture of cooperation, to do tasks themselves and respect for the environment is a community that is prepared for success,” says Jurie Ferreira, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand.

“We hope that projects like this will inspire the community to get involved and make a difference in their environment,’ concludes Ferreira.

The Alberton branch calls on the community to get involved in their community and to join the branch: Visit www.wordlid.co.za.
