Amanzimtoti branch beautifies town during #VegEnBou-week

The AfriForum branch in Amanzimtoti started the organisation’s #VegEnBou-week on 8 August with branch members and volunteers launching various upliftment projects.

The Amanzimtoti branch and community members started the week by making parts of the train bridge in front of Kuswag Skool safer. This involves replacing dangerous pieces of rusted steel. One side of the bridge is completed and the other section forms part of a follow-up repair process.

The branch painted the pedestrian crossing in front of Kuswag Skool on 10 August. During this week AfriForum also donated 20 000 litres of emergency water tanks and a pressure pump to the school which was installed by volunteers. These emergency water tanks are especially needed because there have been regular water outages since the flooding in April 2022.

Furthermore, the Amanzimtoti branch embarked on a cleaning project at the Merebank concentration camp. Members of Durban also helped to get the site clean and tidy.

The #VegEnBou-week was concluded with a concert by singer Jakkie Louw, which was jointly hosted by AfriForum and Kuswag Skool.

“It’s been an exciting week for us. We cannot simply sit back, leave our fate in the hands of the authorities and do nothing,” says Jannie van Staden, Chairperson of the AfriForum branch in Amanzimtoti.

“After the lockdown, the June 2021 protests and the recent floods, it was also necessary for the Amanzimtoti community to come together and enjoy the concert.”

“It is important that branches participate in #VegEnBou-projects. We see daily that the state more often fails to meet its obligations and that communities themselves need to step in to solve problems and make repairs,” says Eugene van Aswegen, District Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.

The Amanzimtoti branch invites the community to join their Facebook page and participate in further projects.

The community is encouraged to become involved in this AfriForum branch to make a real difference: SMS “Amanzimtoti” to 45340 (R1).
