Lower South Coast branch sends lawyer’s letter to Ugu District Municipality

AfriForum’s Lower South Coast branch instructed their legal team on 9 December to warn the Ugu District Municipality to restore and maintain the water supply. This follows several communities on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal that have had to do without water for up to three months.

The municipality attributes the prolonged water supply problem to a broken pipe, but this excuse is not an adequate reason for taps running dry for weeks. Meanwhile, the AfriForum branch has made an emergency water point available for the community at the Dutch Reformed Church in Margate.

“It is unacceptable that we, as taxpayers, must fight for our basic human rights. The authorities are there precisely to protect the constitution and our rights and to provide us with basic services,” says Theuns Boshoff, Chairperson of the Lower South Coast branch.

“Municipalities have become the playground to enrich contractors and cadres while basic service delivery has long ceased to be the priority of the Ugu District Municipality. It is noticeable that every December, there’s a crisis. It’s as if Section 36 of the Municipal Financial Management Act’s regulations is misused and, for that, one needs the ideal time like December to orchestrate a crisis,” says Eugene van Aswegen, District Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.

“We have elderly people who are struggling. The businesses on the South Coast are dependent on tourism and currently, the municipality is sabotaging these businesses with poor service delivery,” adds Boshoff.

AfriForum will consider taking further steps if the Ugu District Municipality continues not to fulfil their legal obligations.
