Refuse removal fiasco: AfriForum’s Pretoria West branch jumps in to help

While an unprotected strike rages on in the Tshwane Metro, essential service delivery in this municipality – such as refuse removal – has been forced to a standstill, so to speak. However, on 4 September AfriForum’s Pretoria West branch stepped in to resolve the refuse removal fiasco in the Danville community. Branch members accompanied trucks and refuse removal employees on their route in this area and helped empty bins.

The Pretoria West branch ensured that the six trucks that arrived to fulfil their duty to the taxpayers in the Danville area were able to carry out their work safely. Refuse removal in this neighbourhood was brough to a halt three weeks ago due to striking municipal employees’ intimidation of contractors responsible for waste removal. Several refuse removal trucks have already been set on fire during the strike. According to the Tshwane Metro, this led to contractors withdrawing their services. The intervention of AfriForum’s Pretoria West branch this week not only helped ensure that refuse could be collected in this area, but it also prevented it from being dumped on the street and in the field.

“The strike is still raging, and it raises great concerns about the metro’s ability to maintain law and order. Meanwhile, basic services that must be provided to members of the public are at the back of the queue. Community members who are already counting their pennies must now dig even deeper to stand in for services that the Tshwane Metro should actually provide. However, with this action the Pretoria West branch showed what a huge influence do-it-yourself initiatives can have on the community,” explains Dewet Ungerer, AfriForum’s coordinator for Greater Pretoria South.

Ungerer encourages the community to get involved, fight for themselves and build the Pretoria West community.
