Robbery suspects arrested after AfriForum neighbourhood watch deploys drone to help police

Two suspects were arrested in Mount Pleasant last night around 20:30 after AfriForum’s Walker Drive Neighborhood Watch deployed its drone and assisted the South African Police Service (SAPS) in a search for suspects linked to a robbery in this suburb of Gqeberha.

The neighbourhood watch managed to identify, with the help of drone technology, one suspect at a property in Mount Pleasant. Another suspect was spotted from the air shortly after, after which the SAPS’s K9 unit investigated the matter further and arrested both suspects.

According to information received from the SAPS, the suspects are connected to a house robbery that took place earlier last night in Mount Pleasant. During the robbery, shots were fired and one suspect was fatally wounded, after which the other two suspects fled the scene on foot.

The police are now investigating a case of house robbery.

“The success of this operation would not have been possible without the cooperation of all the role players involved. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to apprehending the suspects,” explains Hannes Oosthuizen, Leader of AfriForum’s Walker Drive Neighborhood Watch.

“The incident highlights the importance of community involvement to ensure the safety of residents. Neighbourhood watches play a crucial and complementary role in the work that law enforcement agencies perform, by not only making additional expertise and technology available but also by being the eyes and ears at ground level in terms of safety,” says Wikus van der Walt, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Eastern Cape.

“The successful arrest of the suspects in Mount Pleasant is proof of the effectiveness of community involvement in public safety. AfriForum’s Walker Drive Neighbourhood Watch made a critical contribution in this operation and we hope that this will inspire more people to get involved in their local neighbourhood watch and thus contribute to the establishment of a safer community for everyone,” concludes Van der Walt.
