Success: AfriForum neighbourhood watch seizes illegal firearm

The AfriForum neighbourhood watch in Germiston, Gauteng, on  Friday 30 September seized an illegal firearm from a suspect on whose trail they have been the past week.

The Germiston neighbourhood watch on 23 September received information from the public about a suspect in the area who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm. They followed up on this information and a few days later the suspect’s whereabouts were confirmed.

On 30 September an operational team was formed, comprising of AfriForum neighbourhood watch members and Blue Hawk Tactical. The team followed up on further information obtained during the week and the suspect was quickly located. As soon as the suspect identified the AfriForum members he attempted to draw the firearam he was carrying on his person.

The AfriForum members succeeded in disarming him without incident and the suspect, along with the illegal firerarm and ammunition, was handed over to the police.

“We are very grateful that these members managed to act decisively and with restraint during this situation. These volunteers put their lives at risk to help safeguard their communities. AfriForum is very proud of the selfless work all our neighbourhood watch members are doing,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s spokesperson for Community Safety.

“The fact that communities trust our patrollers and are willing to share information about crime with us, also enables our safety structures to perform intelligence driven operations, which are highly successful,” Broodryk concludes.
