AfriForum’s Kraaifontein neighbourhood watch: a thorn in criminal’s sides

AfriForum’s Kraaifontein neighbourhood watch apprehended various suspects during November.

The neighbourhood watch apprehended two suspects over the last three weeks on two separate occasions for respectively being in possession of stolen goods, and trespassing and attempted theft. A warrant was also issued for the arrest of one of the suspects as a result of contempt of Court. Both suspects were handed over to the SAPS.

On Friday 17 November the neighbourhood watch apprehended two shop theft suspects on Aristea Primary School’s grounds after they tried to run away.

The neighbourhood watch’s reaction team also provided assistance to the Joostenberg Vlakte neighbourhood watch and the SAPS after a farm worker was robbed by three men. All three the alleged robbers were apprehended after they tried to hide in a nearby field.

In another case on 10 November, the neighbourhood watch assisted the SAPS in apprehending four suspects in Kraaifontein after these suspects had robbed the MTN shop in Durbanville. The SAPS and the suspects started shooting at one another, during which a police officer was hurt.

“Integrated cooperation between the community and the SAPS in the combatting crime is of the utmost importance. The SAPS needs the community’s help, especially during the coming festive season. We encourage the public to join safety structures and take responsibility for their own safety,” says Johandré van Zyl, AfriForum’s Regional Safety Coordinator for the Western Cape.
