#VulDieGat: Cape Agulhas branch helps municipality with 3 tonnes of tar to repair roads

The AfriForum branch in Cape Agulhas on 14 August began a new era of cooperation with the Cape Agulhas Municipality by handing over 100 bags of tar, i.e. 3 tonnes of tar, to the municipality for repair work on the roads in Bredasdorp’s industrial area and the town’s CBD. With the recent floods and heavy rains, several dangerous potholes have formed in the road which adversely affects local businesses.

The municipality is still busy with the repair work on the roads.

This donation is part of AfriForum’s national project where the organisation’s branches across the country repair potholes. This year’s goal was to repair potholes worth R1 million, but this goal was already exceeded in July: In 2024, almost R1,5 million worth of potholes have already been filled with approximately 400 000 tonnes of tar (or 16 000 bags of tar).

AfriForum’s newly elected Cape Agulhas branch management is committed to serving the interests of the community in collaboration with the municipality and other role players. “It is important for us to work together with the Cape Agulhas Municipality. We are grateful that we were able to contribute to this important repair work and look forward to undertaking many other projects for the benefit of the community, in collaboration with the municipality,” says Freddie Els, the new Chairperson of the Cape Agulhas branch.

The new management of the Cape Agulhas branch consists of Els (Chairperson), Jaco Marais (Vice-chairperson), Lettie Pienaar (Secretary), Douw Willems (Treasurer) and Andrew Hudson (Local Government Affairs).

The Cape Agulhas branch is also establishing a neighbourhood watch in Struisbaai. “Following increasing crime in the area, it is extremely important that our community is secured. We invite the community to get involved in our projects, but also to join our neighbourhood watch and thus make our community stronger,” says Marais, the newly elected Vice-chairperson of the branch.
