AfriForum and Batlharo Boo Tokwana-Ba-Ga-Masibi forge ties

AfriForum and the Batlharo Boo Tokwana-Ba-Ga-Masibi Traditional Community of Disaneng, west of Mahikeng in the Northwest Province, forged ties during a meeting between representatives of AfriForum and the Traditional Council of the Batlharo Boo Tokwana-Ba-Ga-Masibi on 3 April 2023. The parties agreed to specifically collaborate on agricultural development, community self-sufficiency and ensuring the ownership of the land of this Traditional Community.

“In Setswana we have a saying: Modiri ga se moji. The meaning of this saying is that the one who does the work is not rewarded. The establishment of this mutual recognition and collaboration agreement is not for ourselves, but for our children and the generations that will follow them. Our reality is that different cultural communities are living in the same country; it provides us with the opportunity to learn from each other – it also requires us to live in harmony to ensure a prosperous future for our children,” says Kgosi Mogakolodi Masibi, Kgosi (senior traditional leader) of the Batlharo Boo Tokwana-Ba-Ga-Masibi Traditional Community.

“For a solution to work it must be based on reality – it must be built on truth. Our reality is that there are many different cultural communities that call the southern tip Africa their home. The plans we make for the future must take this reality into account, that is why AfriForum is building a network of cultural communities on the basis of mutual recognition and respect. We believe that strengthening community federalism, built from the bottom upwards based on cultural identity is key to solving the problems created by the failing state,” says Barend Uys, Head of Intercultural Relations and Cooperation at AfriForum.

Traditional leadership is an important community institution of traditional communities and have a critical role to play to preserve language, culture and heritage. This is in turn important for maintaining and developing cultural identity and the sustainable continued existence of self-reliant communities.
