AfriForum criticizes SA Tourism and Department of Tourism over planned sponsorship of English football club

The civil rights organisation AfriForum is demanding answers from the Department of Tourism, regarding the Department’s plans to grant a sponsorship of £42.5 million to the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. This sponsorship between SA Tourism and the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club will apparently last for 36 months. AfriForum believes that these funds should instead be used on home soil for the development of South African sports talent.

In a legal letter today, the organisation demanded that clarity be given about, among other things, where the £42.5 million – or approximately R 910 997 814.75 – will come from. As well as whether the current socio-economic challenges faced by South African citizens were ever considered when this decision was made.

AfriForum further demanded that no funds be allocated to the football club until South African citizens have been given a valid explanation for the sponsorship.

“AfriForum strongly condemns the possible involvement of the Department of Tourism in an international football team, especially since not enough time, energy and funds are spent to develop sports on home soil. These funds can especially be used to help talented young people in difficult circumstances to develop their skills in order to escape their circumstances,” says Ronald Peters, manager of Sport and Youth at AfriForum.
