AfriForum branches issue letter of demand to Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality

On 2 February, AfriForum’s branches in Kempton Park and Springs instructed their legal team to present the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality with a letter urging the municipality to resolve the poor service delivery of garbage disposal.

This comes after the lack of garbage collection and transfer stations that are not maintained or cleaned led to frustration in communities.

“It is unacceptable that we as taxpayers must fight for basic human rights and services. The authorities are there precisely to uphold the Constitution by protecting our rights and providing basic services, which we pay for. We insist that the municipality outline a workable and sustainable plan and make it available to us on how they will deal with this lack of garbage disposal,” says Jurie Ferreira, District Coordinator for the East Rand.

AfriForum will take further legal action if the municipality does not proceed and fulfil its legal obligations.

“Besides households’ garbage bins overflowing and the health risks that the community faces daily, the illegal dumping of garbage is becoming a trend,” concludes Ferreira.
