AfriForum serves court papers to NERSA regarding power problems in Rustenburg

AfriForum’s Rustenburg branch served court papers to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) today (4 December) to urgently resolve the ongoing problems regarding electricity supply in the Rustenburg Local Municipality. This follows in response to the continuous power outages that Rustenburg is experiencing due to poor maintenance of this municipality’s electricity infrastructure.

According to AfriForum, the court documents were served on NERSA because the municipality does not meet the minimum standards required under the relevant legislation that must be regulated by NERSA. AfriForum emphasises that legal action is now unavoidable in order to put pressure on the energy regulator, which in turn must ensure that the Rustenburg Local Municipality fulfils its legal obligations.

“The Rustenburg Local Municipality has an obligation to provide basic services to their residents, and that is all that the residents of Rustenburg are requesting,” says Armand Viljoen, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Marico District.

“We are therefore now advocating for improved communication channels, an efficient fault and outage reporting system, and a fast and reliable recovery time for power outages. The residents of Rustenburg deserve better, and we will not rest until we get it,” concludes Viljoen.

According to Viljoen, AfriForum is determined to protect the interests of the community and ensure that a proper electricity supply is maintained in Rustenburg.
