AfriForum’s Springs branch ready to fight local riots

AfriForum’s Springs branch is now ready to fight riots in this East Rand town. A surge in violent protest actions in Springs forced this branch to place an increased focus on community safety. New safety equipment was purchased last week and neighbourhood watch members also recently completed training in effective crowd control.

Special shields used for riot control as well as helmets and arm and leg protection were purchased for the branch’s neighbourhood watch team.

According to Jurie Ferreira, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand, this neighbourhood watch is now fully equipped to offer assistance in cases where violent protest actions endanger residents and infrastructure in this town.

“The purchase of this equipment is proof of how a community can organise itself and of what community structures with a strong support base can achieve. In this case, it is each AfriForum member’s financial contribution that makes this branch grow from strength to strength,” says Ferreira.
