Community jumps in, cleans up more than a tonne of waste

The AfriForum Centurion branch’s neighbourhood team and members of the Kloofsig community cleaned up more than a tonne of waste in this small neighbourhood, which borders the Groenkloof Nature Reserve, during a huge clean-up operation on Saturday (20 January).

The cleaning action stems from the initiative that the Kloofsig community itself took to clean up their neighbourhood. The help of the AfriForum Centurion branch’s neighbourhood team was called in, and this team, without a moment’s hesitation, agreed to jump in and make the cleaning operation a success.

According to Dewet Ungerer, AfriForum Coordinator for Greater Pretoria South, grass was cut, trees were pruned and cut up, and an area of roughly 3 000 m2 was cleaned.

Ungerer emphasises that clean-up actions like this have many benefits for a community. “Communities that roll up their sleeves to improve their neighbourhood develop a valuable sense of community pride. It also provides an opportunity for individuals to get involved and feel that they themselves can make a difference. Furthermore, it establishes meaningful relationships between community members,” explains Ungerer. “In this respect, Kloofsig’s community is truly an exceptional example for others, and we hope that the flame of enthusiasm will also encourage other neighbourhoods in Centurion in particular to get involved.”

“Community projects in Centurion have shown good growth in 2023, and AfriForum’s Centurion branch is looking forward to further expanding these initiatives this year in cooperation with communities that want to keep their neighbourhoods clean themselves,” says Ungerer.
