Success: AfriForum neighbourhood watch apprehends vehicle thief

On Saturday 14 January,AfriForum neighbourhood watch members and other role players assisted in the arrest of a suspected vehicle thief in Benoni, Gauteng.

A vigilant community member noticed the stolen vehicle speeding away from the crime scene and notified a local security company and neighbourhood watch members. The vehicle was pursued to Lakeside Mall, where the suspect abandoned the vehicle and tried to hide away in one of the stores.

The suspect even tried to outwit security and neighbourhood watch members by changing his clothes, but he was unsuccessful and was apprehended. A signal jamming device as well as false number plates were found in his possession.

“This is the type of work our neighbourhood watch members do daily. We commend these volunteers for their efforts to help keep their communities safe. Unfortunately, we are in a situation where the South African Police Service (SAPS) has admitted that they are unable to uphold their mandate, leaving citizens no other choice than to get involved themselves,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s spokesperson for Community Safety.

“The increase we’ve seen in community involvement in our safety structures has translated into a greater number of success stories. This is very encouraging,” concludes Broodryk.
